In 1759 an enterprising young Arthur Guinness used his inheritance to sign a 9000 year lease to the dilapidated St. James's Gate Brewery in Dublin, Ireland. While initially just a local porter, over the decades it slowly started exporting to England, America, Guernsey, Barbados, Trinidad and Sierra Leone, and by the 1930's almost 10% of Irish men relied upon the brewery and its iconic dark beer to make their living. Though today Guinness is brewed around the world, it will forever be linked to Ireland.
